Job summary
HCPC registered and practicing as a Registered Biomedical Scientist, assisting Senior BMSs, and Lead BMS. Leading in day to day management and directing established workflow practices in individual laboratory sections to ensure an efficient effective and comprehensive service in the Cellular Pathology dept. Overseeing BMS band 5s, Associate Practitioners (AP) and MLAs,
Ensuring the laboratory produces output that fulfil the criteria required by UKAS ISO 15189:2022, ensuring all work is Quality controlled to the correct standards before leaving the laboratory. To ensure all quality issues are resolved and recorded escalating as appropriate.
To assist in the training of staff and ensure all laboratory staff are trained and competent to a level appropriate for their role.
This entails production of histological stained sections of surgical and post mortem tissues, which the consultant pathologist uses in diagnosis.
Please note for the band 6 post - Requires IBMS specialist portfolio in Histology, candidates without this qualification may be considered for a band 5 post
Main duties of the job
- Act as deputy to Senior BMS
- Responsible for the day to day workflow management within the section they are rota into, managing break times and work allocation to members of the team, adapting as required
- Quality Assurance of any tests leaving the laboratory to ensure they are of a high standard and requesting repeat of any tests failing this criteria.
- Participate in training of staff, ensuring training records are updated and any training issues raised with training officer and lead BMS
- Assist in the introduction of new technology or methodologies
- Assist in the introduction of quality improvements
- Trouble shoot and resolve any issues identified during laboratory practices, escalating where necessary
- Participate and ensure that quality processes are adhered to and reported instigating and helping to resolve any non-conformities (CAPA)

Education, Qualifictions and Training

- Registration with the Health Professions Council as a Biomedical Scientist.
- A Biomedical Science Degree or equivalent.

Experience

- Experience of standard diagnostic methods in the relevant pathology discipline.
- Significant post registration experience of working in a diagnostic pathology laboratory in the relevant discipline.

- Safety regulations relating to safe working in pathology laboratories and categorisation of biological agents according to hazard.
- Follow professional development pathway to maintain and develop relevant skills.
- Good written and verbal communication skills to ensure clear communication of result data to other healthcare staff.

- Computer keyboard skills & basic use of Microsoft office suite.
- Good manual dexterity & accurate pipetting skills.
