Job summary
We have an opportunity for a Highly Specialist Speech & Language Therapist to join our Acute Medicine and Healthcare for Older People (HCOP) team at QEHB. Our service supports a wide range of patient cohorts who have communication and/or swallowing disorders across wards including acute medicine, respiratory including the respiratory support unit, emergency department and healthcare for older people.
We have a large yet close-knit, highly skilled team who contribute to our robust supervision structure. Innovation, participation in research and clinical/professional development are actively encouraged. We have a well-established SLT led Videofluoroscopy and FEES services so opportunities to access these instrumental assessments to help to shape your clinical practice would also be available.

Main duties of the job
The successful candidate would provide highly specialist input Specialist Surgery team, alongside a peer team leader. You would work closely with your peer SLT Team Leader, Specialist Speech and Language Therapists, NQP SLTs, and SLT assistants to provide an excellent level of care to our patient group.
The successful candidate will have a clear passion in assessing and managing dysphagia and communication
difficulties relating to the acute medicine, respiratory and HCOP caseload in a fast-paced environment.
Your responsibilities will include, but not be limited to:
* assessing and managing patients with communication, airway and swallowing disorders
* service development and audit
* training and supervision of junior colleagues and students
* working flexibly and thriving in a fast-paced environment
* Utilising specialist assessments including FEES
* Regular quality improvement projects
* Involvement in audit, research and presenting patient outcomes

Qualifications
Essential
- A good standard of secondary education including
- A-Level or equivalent.
- BSc or recognised MSc degree in Speech and Language Therapy.
- Membership of RCSLT.
- Registration with HCPC.
- Completed RCSLT Level C/Level 5 EDS dysphagia competencies (or above).
Desirable
- Advanced competencies e.g. FEES, tracheostomy, videofluoroscopy
Experience
Essential
- Significant experience of working independently with adult dysphagia caseload at a specialist level
- Significant experience of working with medicine, respiratory and HCOP caseload
- Significant experience of working independently within an acute hospital setting
- Significant experience of working successfully as part of a multi-disciplinary team
- Significant post-graduate training, through attendance at short courses and/or via personal study.
- Evidence of attendance at national conferences
- or similar.
- Experience of training Speech and Language Therapy undergraduates and junior SLTs.
- Experience of completing audits or quality improvement projects.
- Demonstration of people management at either an individual or team level.
Desirable
- Membership of a relevant CEN.
- Post-graduate education or research.
- Knowledge acquired through attendance at postgraduate specialist courses at Masters level or equivalent.
- Knowledge of the strategic direction of the Trust.
- Knowledge of working with patients requiring
- respiratory support such as tracheostomy and NIV.
