SOC code: frequently asked questions

What is a SOC code?
A SOC (Standard Occupational Classification) code is a 4-digit number the UK Home Office uses to classify occupations for visa sponsorship. Each eligible code has a per-occupation minimum salary, called the going rate, that sponsors must pay.
How do I find the SOC code for my job?
Type your job title in the search box above. The tool matches it against 30,000+ ONS SOC 2020 occupation titles and returns the official code, visa route, and minimum sponsorship salary.
What is the minimum salary for a SOC code?
Each SOC code has a going rate set by the Home Office. The binding minimum is whichever is higher: the going rate for that code, or the general threshold (£41,700 for Skilled Worker or £25,000 for Health and Care Worker).
What is the SOC code going rate?
The going rate is the per-occupation salary floor derived from the Annual Survey of Hours and Earnings (ASHE). The Home Office applies the 25th-percentile ASHE figure for each SOC code, updated each April with the Immigration Rules statement of changes.
What is the difference between the Immigration Salary List and going rates?
The Immigration Salary List (ISL) lists SOC codes where sponsors can pay 80% of the standard going rate. Going rates apply to all eligible codes; the ISL discount only applies to codes on the list. Both are shown on each SOC code detail page.
