Job summary

The Imaging Physics and Radiation Safety unit within the Northern Medical Physics and Clinical Engineering directorate is seeking to recruit an enthusiastic Clinical Scientist with experience and specialist knowledge in diagnostic radiology physics and radiation safety.

This is an exciting opportunity to join a growing team of clinical scientists and technologists who contribute to the development and delivery of a comprehensive range of diagnostic radiology and radiation safety services across the region.

The role will include:

  • Supporting the quality assurance and performance testing of X-ray equipment
  • Providing support to Medical Physics Experts (MPEs) and Radiation Protection Advisers (RPAs) within the group.

The successful candidate will play an integral role in maintaining high standards of service delivery, while contributing to service development and innovation within a dynamic and supportive team environment.

Main duties of the job

You will contribute to the development and delivery of diagnostic radiology physics services to users of ionising radiation across the North of England.

The role involves travel to hospitals across the region where services are delivered; therefore, a current full driving licence and a willingness to drive is essential.

Working within a large regional service, you will be exposed to a diverse and varied workload, supporting ongoing professional development. Opportunities will be provided for formal training via participation on internal and external courses, and to work towards expert certification.

You will also play an active role in the department's extensive teaching programmes, including contributing to the delivery of the educational component of the Newcastle Modernising Scientific Careers Scientific Training Programme in Medical Physics.

Person Specification

Qualifications & Education

Essential

  • Degree or equivalent in relevant subject.
  • Appropriate post-graduate degree at master's level, or equivalent level of specialist knowledge and experience.
  • HCPC registration as a Clinical Scientist or working towards registration.
  • Possession of full UK-valid driving licence if required for role.

Knowledge & Experience

Essential

  • Good knowledge and experience of scientific method, data collection, and analysis of data using standard tools and software.
  • Knowledge of scientific theory, legislation, standards, guidance and safety principles relevant to working area.

Desirable

  • Knowledge of relevant quality assurance or calibration procedures
  • Knowledge of functioning and safe use of the relevant clinical diagnostic equipment and test equipment
  • Experience of performing, publishing & presenting research

Skills & Abilities

Essential

  • Ability to interpret complex technical information & undertake complex calculation & data analysis.
  • Good written and oral communication and presentation skills.
  • Excellent team-working skills and the ability to work independently.
  • IT skills including use of databases & spreadsheets

  • Teaching, training and mentoring skills.
