Job summary

We are seeking a dynamic and committed Consultant Breast Radiologist to join our well-established Breast Imaging Service, supporting both symptomatic and NHS Breast Screening Programme (NHSBSP) activity across North Lancashire and South Cumbria.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will contribute to both symptomatic and screening breast imaging services, including mammography, ultrasound, MRI and image-guided procedures. The post offers the opportunity to work within an experienced multidisciplinary team of breast clinicians, radiographers, advanced practitioners, nursing staff and administrative colleagues.

We welcome candidates with a range of interests and can offer flexible job planning. The post may be configured as a dedicated Breast Radiology role with no requirement to participate in the general Radiology on-call rota. Alternatively, candidates wishing to maintain a broader practice may include general radiology sessions and on-call participation within their job plan.

Service Overview

The Breast Imaging Service operates across Furness General Hospital, Royal Lancaster Infirmary, Westmorland General Hospital and mobile screening units. Recent investment has enhanced our digital mammography, ultrasound and SECTRA PACS infrastructure.

About us

We operate from three main hospitals - Furness General Hospital (FGH) in Barrow, the Royal Lancaster Infirmary (RLI), and Westmorland General Hospital (WGH) in Kendal, as well as a number of community health care premises including Millom Hospital and GP Practice, Queen Victoria Hospital in Morecambe, and Ulverston Community Health Centre.

FGH and the RLI have a range of General Hospital services, with full Emergency Departments, Critical/Coronary Care units and various Consultant-led services.

WGH provides a range of General Hospital services, together with an Urgent Treatment Centre, that can help with a range of non-life threatening conditions such as broken bones and minor illnesses.

All three main hospitals provide a range of planned care including outpatients, diagnostics, therapies, day case and inpatient surgery. In addition, a range of local outreach services and diagnostics are provided from community facilities across Morecambe Bay

Education & Qualifications

Essential

  • MB ChB (or equivalent).
  • FRCR (or equivalent)
  • Strong educational, qualification & professional track record.
  • Full GMC Registration with Licence to Practise.
  • Fellowship or additional training in Breast Imaging
  • Entry on the GMC Specialist Register for Clinical Radiology, or within six months of award at time of interview.

Desirable

  • Teaching or training qualifications.

Skills, Ability & Knowledge

Essential

  • Ability to plan and develop the service to provide patient centred care.
  • Ability to organise and prioritise work effectively.
  • Ability to communicate appropriately in English (both in writing and verbally) with colleagues, patients, relatives, GPs, radiographers, nurses and other agencies.
  • Good standard of verbal and written English.
  • Ability and willingness to work within the Trust and NHS performance framework and targets.

Desirable

  • Ability to plan strategically and work with the Trust's partners.
  • Experience of teaching clinical skills.
  • Computer, PACS and VR software literate.

Clinical Experience

Essential

  • Five years supervised training in an appropriate SpR equivalent training programme (or equivalent).
  • Demonstrated ability to take full and independent responsibility for clinical care of patients and contribute to on call.
  • Experience of offering expert clinical opinion on a range of radiological problems.
  • Experience of evaluating own radiological practice and audit practices.
  • Experience of NHS Breast Screening Programme (NHSBSP) practice and standards.
  • Experience of breast screening film reading and assessment clinics.
  • Experience of symptomatic breast imaging including mammography, breast ultrasound and image-guided procedures.
  • Participation in NHSBSP quality assurance processes, audit and multidisciplinary team working.
  • Participation in the PERFORMS self-assessment scheme or equivalent breast imaging quality assurance programme.

Desirable

  • Experience of working in UK.
  • Subspecialty interest to fit with the needs of the department
  • Experience of supervising Trainees.
  • Broad radiology skills and experience - plain film, US, CT and MR.
  • Experience of NHSBSP assessment clinics, vacuum-assisted procedures and localisation techniques.
