Job summary

This is an opportunity to apply for a new breast radiologist post, joining a supportive team of five experienced breast consultant radiologists. The post is made from a combination of retirements. The Worcestershire Acute Hospitals Trust manages the Hereford and Worcester Breast Screening Programme together with symptomatic breast imaging for Worcestershire. This combined Breast Imaging Service is a sub-directorate of the Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust recently formed Breast Directorate.

In April 2020, Breast Radiology and Breast Surgery merged to form a new Breast Directorate, part of the Women and Childrens Division. This is proving an exciting and supportive way of working for our breast team, facilitating a breast disease focus within our organisation and securing the future development of our service.

As part of the Consultant Advisory Appointment Committee, shortlisted candidates will be asked to provide a 5 minute presentation on the topic: Challenges and opportunities of AI in Breast Imaging

Main duties of the job

The post will involve both screening and symptomatic breast imaging.

The post holder will have breast imaging duties at both the Worcester Breast Unit and Alexandra Hospital Breast Unit.

The post holder will undertake a range of symptomatic breast imaging including: mammography and ultrasound breast and axilla for rapid access breast clinics, mammographic reporting, breast and axillary diagnostic ultrasound and image guided (mammographic or ultrasound) markings, localisations, breast and axillary biopsies, and ultrasound guided breast drainage and film reading.

There is a commitment to Breast MRI services for Wye Valley Trust for reporting of screening and symptomatic breast MRI that can be done remotely from the Worcester Breast Unit.

The Trust have supported breast radiology remote working with provision of a home work station for this post. It is envisaged that these will be used for MDT prep, symptomatic reporting & review plus teaching/ SpA purposes. Screen film reading is not possible from home at the moment but it is hoped this facility will be offered in the near future.

The post holder will be required to participate in providing annual/ study leave cover across Worcester Acute Trust.

There will be active involvement in regular Multi-Disciplinary Meetings, provided by cancer services.

Job responsibilities

This job description, together with the job plan, will be reviewed annually and agreed with the Clinical Director and Divisional Director, on behalf of

the Chief Medical Officer, to ensure that it continually reflects the areas of work, clinical responsibility of the post and purchaser requirements.

  • A suitably experienced post-holder will be expected to provide a clinical service in the relevant specialty to patients of the Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust and to General Practitioners.
  • The post-holder will be expected to provide a service to patients of the Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust, General Practitioners and to attend multi-disciplinary meetings. The successful candidate will be expected to work within multi-disciplinary teams in providing high quality clinical care. It is anticipated work will be undertaken on three sites and closer to the patients home. The Trust is seeking to extend services to GP surgeries/health centres etc and job plans may be revised in due course.
  • The post-holder will provide support to the A&E department and acute medicine to ensure timely appropriate care and patient flow through the hospital.
  • The post-holder will provide consultation and advisory service to clinical colleagues in the Trust and Primary Care.

Management and Administrative Experience

Essential

  • Ability to organise and prioritise workload effectively

  • Experience of audit management and conducting clinical audit

Teaching Experience

Essential

  • Ability to teach clinical skills to medical, nursing staff and other disciplines
  • Experience of teaching clinical skills to undergraduates and postgraduates

Qualifications

  • Full GMC Registration with a Licence to practise.
  • Entry on Specialist Register in Radiology

  • CCT or Portfolio Pathway (was CESR)

  • Success in Intercollegiate Specialty Examination or overseas equivalent

Experience

  • Clinical training and experience equivalent to that required for gaining (UK) CCT in Radiology
  • Ability to offer expert clinical opinion on range of problems both emergency and elective within specialty
  • Ability to take full and independent responsibility for clinical care of patients
  • Expertise in sub-specialty

Desirable

  • Experience in vacuum assisted biopsy and excision procedures.
  • Experience in breast MRI.
