Job summary
The Department of Anaesthesia is part of the Division of Perioperative and Critical Care together with Theatres, Pre-operative assessment, Pain, Psychology, Sterile Services and ITU. The Trust appreciates the unique role that Anaesthesia plays in the delivery of a large number of services. The Clinical Director is a permanent member of the management team for the Theatre Division. Consultants have roles as Clinical Leads in the constituent areas.
All major surgical specialties are provided by the Trust with the exception of cardiac, neurosurgery and plastic surgery. Major cases are performed in Vascular, Upper and Lower Gastrointestinal Surgery, Head and Neck (ENT and maxillofacial), Orthopaedics and Gynaecology.
The role includes cover of both elective and emergency work with an on-call rota that covers both acute sites at a frequency of 1:22.

Main duties of the job
To work under the direction of the Clinical Directors to co-ordinate and deliver the strategic and operational aspects of the Anaesthesia and Critical Care services across the region. These will reflect National and Local priorities including the strategic direction of South Tyneside and Sunderland Hospitals Trust and the Division of Perioperative and Critical Care.
You are expected to be on the GMC Specialist Register or within six months of obtaining your CCST in Anaesthesia at the time of accepting the Post.
Consultant performance is monitored within the Directorate and strong emphasis is given to personal career development, in-line with clinical governance. All Consultants must comply with Trust policy for revalidation and job planning.

Person Specification
Qualifications
Essential
- Must hold FRCA or equivalent qualification.
- Hold a CCST and be on GMC Specialist Register or be within six months of being admitted to the GMC Specialist Register.
Experience
Essential
- Experience and training in post-graduate education.
Desirable
- Experience in ophthalmic anaesthesia including blunt needle blocks.
Skills and Abilities
Essential
- Possess good interpersonal and communication skills with demonstrable evidence of good team working.
Desirable
- Evidence skills required for paediatric anaesthesia appropriate for the district general paediatric population.
- Demonstrates the ability to organise and deliver management activity and training.
- Evidence of significant interest in research and / or service quality improvement.
- Evidence skills required for management of a busy obstetric unit for the district general obstetric population.
