Birmingham Women's and Children's NHS Foundation Trust (BWC) are currently the Lead Provider of the West Midlands CAMHS Provider Collaborative (WMCPC) bringing together integrated provision of specialist inpatient mental health, learning disability and autism services, for young people aged 13-18.The Toucan West Midlands CAMHS Provider Collaborative (WMCPC) is seeking to substantively recruit a Child and Adolescent Consultant Psychiatrist who is committed to working with children and young people with complex mental health needs. This post will provide the medical leadership within an experienced nursing team who gatekeep all access to T4 services.

The successful candidate will work with Toucan WMCPC Eating Disorder Intensive In reach Team (ED-IIT) and the Referral Coordination Hub (RCH) gatekeeping & advice and guidance services (in hours). There will be opportunities to contribute to shaping alternatives to T4 services further and for providing leadership and training across complex care and inpatient pathways.

Main duties of the job

The Consultant will provide clinical duties supporting access assessments, advice and guidance for referred CYP. Taking a lead role with a strong team of clinical nurse specialists you will be providing clinical expertise and a coordinated approach to undertaking psychiatric & medical risk assessment of CYP referred to T4. The Consultant will join the RCH and ED-IIT team, contributing to the ongoing development of the exciting transformation of these services.

Job responsibilities

The duties of the post holder will include providing psychiatric assessment and gatekeeping service for young people in the West Midlands aged up to their 18th birthday, who may require inpatient psychiatric admission.

The post holder will be expected to work closely with members of the community services, and relevant professionals such as Tier 3 CAMHS teams, GPs, pediatricians, educational professionals, social care and the regional inpatient units. The post holder will work in accordance with the values of Birmingham Womens and Childrens Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and WMCPC.

The principal duties will include the following:

Consultant Psychiatrist input and gatekeeping to the RCH and EDIIT.

  1. To assess patients, including those with eating disorders and co-morbid mental health disorders. This may include:

    • Medical assessment of patients.
    • Psychiatricassessmentincludingeatingdisorderandnon-eatingdisorder psychopathology.
    • Formulation of complex cases with medical and psychiatric needs.
    • Risk assessment and management for the medical and psychiatric components of the disorder.
    • Supporting the monitoring and treatment of physical complications of eating disorders in collaboration with other health care professionals (dieticians, physicians, pediatricians, general practitioners, etc).
    • Supporting psychiatric aspects of mental illness, including core psychopathology and psychiatric co-morbidities.
  2. A further component of the post is to work closely with regional Psychiatric inpatient units, building positive working relationships, contributing to admission planning, and safe discharge planning, with other members of the WMCPC team.

  3. Build and maintain positive working relationships with medical colleagues at BWC and local DGHs to develop a pathway to safely manage patients who are physically compromised due to their eating disorders, alongside the intensive ED in reach approach.

  4. Implementation of relevant guidelines e.g. Junior/ MARSIPAN guidelines

  5. The post holder will be required to have a thorough understanding of the Mental Health Act (MHA 1983).

  6. Working in collaboration with the wider multidisciplinary team and providing clinical and medical leadership within the eating disorder team.

  7. They will provide supervision to any junior medical staff allocated to the team.

  8. The post holder will need to have experience in Tier 4 in-patient CAMHS at Consultant level.

  9. The post holder will need to experience completing gatekeeping/access assessments for Children and young people presenting in crisis.

  10. Contribute to WMCPC research and development.

  11. The post holder will demonstrate in-depth knowledge of Provider Collaborative models and their role in driving system-wide transformation. They will have significant experience working across regional systems, providing clinical leadership, influencing multi-agency partners, and contributing to the development of cohesive, patient-centred pathways across a complex healthcare landscape.

    Other Duties of the Consultant

    All Consultants are expected to devote time to supporting professional activities, teaching, research and personal development.

    Teaching: The post holder will be expected to involve themselves in:

    • Training of psychiatrists.
    • Training of multidisciplinary staff in the community eating disorder team

Person Specification

  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualificaton
  • CCT holder in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry or equivalent (or within 6 months of becoming eligible for CCT)
  • Current full registration with the GMC (or eligible for full registration with the GMC at time of appointment)
  • Wide range of experience in child and adolescent psychiatry including tier 4 experience
  • GMC Licence to practise
  • MRC Psych (or equivalent)
  • Approval (or eligible for approval) under Section 12(2) of the Mental Health Act
  • Eligible to work in the UK
  • Provision of high-quality mental services, as trainee or consultant
  • A broad range of experience in Child & Adolescent psychiatry and working with multi-disciplinary teams
  • Experience of assessment, treatment and medical monitoring of patients and their families
