This is an opportunity to be part of a high-performing, multidisciplinary team based at Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham, delivering complex spinal surgery across the breadth of adult spinal pathologies, including adult deformity, complex trauma, intra and extradural tumours including primary bone tumours, and spinal CSF disorders. The appointee will join 9 other spinal surgeons (7 neurosurgical, 2 orthopaedic), providing routine and subspeciality spinal care and participating in a 1:8 on call rota. The unit is extremely busy, and the successful applicant will need the ability to assess and surgically manage a wide range of pathologies as would be anticipated in a major spinal unit.There is no cranial practice within the role.There is an expectation of developing a subspeciality interest aligning with the departmental needs whilst continuing to support the routine work within the department.
Main duties of the job
The appointed consultant will play a key role in the delivery of both elective and emergency spinal assessment and surgery. This includes involvement through the full clinical pathway, from initial triage and clinical assessment, surgical intervention and in-patient care, to discharge planning and subsequent follow up.
Working closely with multidisciplinary colleagues within UHB and across the regional network, the Consultant will contribute to the timely and effective management of spinal cases, supporting equitable access to specialist care for patients across the West Midlands. The postholder will also be expected to deliver clinical activity and administrative responsibilities in line with the agreed job plan and departmental service model.
Patient-centred care is a core priority, and the Consultant will ensure patients, and their families are meaningfully involved in decisions about treatment, with a clear emphasis on communication, safety, and personalised outcomes.
The Consultant will engage in audit, research, teaching and clinical governance, supporting the refinement of neurosurgical pathways and contributing to the overall quality and sustainability of the service. Maintaining GMC specialist registration and active professional development will be essential in delivering a high standard of practice aligned with Trust and national expectations.

Job responsibilities
*To undertake the full range of activities associated with a spinal emergency on call duty, including the appropriate management of patients post-take.
*To manage a cohort of elective spinal patients from the triage and management of referral, through stages of diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation, with appropriate onward referral or discharge as required.
*To engage with and support colleagues to ensure appropriate and timely management of spinal patients within the West Midlands region.
*To deliver appropriate levels of clinical, administrative and surgical activity proportionate with the agreed job plan in line with the specialty activity plan.
*To ensure that patients are involved in decisions about their care and respond to their views.
*To support the ongoing improvement of spinal patient pathways within UHB through the sharing of good practice, undertaking audits and research and participating in governance practices such as incident reporting and investigation.
*To engage with continuous professional development, maintain GMC specialist registration and licence to practice.
