The Clinical Research Fellow will play a key role in the delivery and developmentbothof dermatology research withinUHL and at theUniversityof Manchestercontributing at a level expected of a registrar (ST3+) with increasing autonomy.

The post holder will support a portfolio of clinical trials and investigator-led studiesincluding at theCentre for Occupational and Environmental Healthat theUniversityofManchester,whilemaintaininga defined level of clinical responsibility. This role is designed to support progression towards dermatology specialty training by developing advanced clinical, academic, and leadership skills within an NHS research environment.

The weekly timetable for the role will include:

  • 32 hours:Cutaneousresearch clinics, administrativedutiesand academic working

  • 8 hours:Research supportfor the EPIDERM reporting schemeat the Centre for Occupational and EnvironmentalHealthatthe University of Manchester

In addition, there will be opportunities, depending on competencies,to:

  • Participate inweekly skin cancer clinics

  • Undertake aweekly dermatological surgical list

Job description

Job responsibilities

Key responsibilities will include;

  • Take a leading role in the coordination and delivery of dermatology research studies, including commercial trials and studies within the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) portfolio.

  • Contribute to study design, feasibility assessments, and protocol development alongside Principal Investigators.

  • Prepare andsubmitresearch documentation, including ethics applications via the Health Research Authority (HRA), and local R&D approvals.

  • Independently recruit, consent, and manage study participantsin accordance withGood Clinical Practice (GCP).

  • Participate in dermatology outpatient clinics at registrar level, withappropriate supervision.

  • Independently assess and manage patients presenting with a wide range of dermatological conditions.

  • Support specialist clinics (e.g. skin cancer, inflammatory dermatoses, biologics services) where relevant to research activity.

  • Lead clinical audit and quality improvement projects aligned with Trust and departmental priorities.

  • Contribute to service development initiatives, particularly those integrating research into routine clinical care.

Person Specification

Training & Qualifications

Essential

  • Medical degree (MBBS or equivalent).
  • Full registration with the General Medical Council (GMC) with a licence to practise.
  • Completion of Foundation Training and Core Medical Training (or equivalent), with competencies suitable for ST3-level practice
  • Membership of the Royal College of Physicians (MRCP) or equivalent.

Desirable

  • Previous experience in dermatology research or clinical trials.
  • Academic output (publications, presentations at national/international meetings).
  • Higher degree (MSc, MD, or PhD), completed or in progress.

Experience

Essential

  • Demonstrable experience in dermatology (e.g. prior rotation, trust-grade post, or equivalent exposure).
  • Evidence of active involvement in clinical research, audit, or quality improvement.
  • Evidence of teaching experience and commitment to education.
  • Strong clinical decision-making skills appropriate to registrar level.

Desirable

  • Experience supervising junior staff or leading projects.

Communication & Relationship Skills

  • High level written and oral communication skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work with a high degree of tact.

Desirable

  • Demonstrates high level of emotional intelligence, empathy and facilitation skills

  • Good IT skills - ability to use Microsoft Office and clinical systems
  • Commitment to excellence in patient care
  • Ability to exercise sound judgements when faced with conflicting pressures

  • Knowledge of existing research systems such as RedCap, SPSS, STATA or other statistical software package
