Job summary

The Rheumatology Department based at University Hospital of Wales serves the population of Cardiff and Vale University Health Board in respect of rheumatology services.

Specialist paediatric rheumatology services is provided by Welsh Health Specialised Services Committee (WHSSC) with two WTE paediatric rheumatology consultant and specialist nurse.

The Nurse Specialist Team provide medication monitoring and biologic services.There is a specialist ankylosing spondylitis service and a combined clinic with dermatology.

Close links are enjoyed with other specialties including renal and respiratory medicine - there are specialist vasculitis and interstitial lung disease clinics.

Joint and soft tissue injections are performed when possible during the clinics or referred for guided injections to radiology.Infusions of therapeutic substances such as biologics and Iloprost are given in the Day Unit. The Specialty Registrars and Consultants provide day-time on-call for rheumatology for emergency and in-patient referrals.

Main duties of the job

To provide with Consultant colleagues (as appropriate) a service in the speciality to the hospitals so designated, with responsibility for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of illness and promotion of health.

To have continuing responsibility for the care of patients in your charge (as appropriate) in liaison with Consultant colleagues and for the proper functioning of the department in line with the Operational Policy and Strategic Plan (as amended from time to time).

To be responsible for the professional supervision and management of resident medical / dental staff. If appropriate the post holder will be named in the contracts of resident medical / dental staff as the person responsible for overseeing their training and as an initial source of advice to such doctors regarding their careers.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Full GMC registration with licence to practice
  • On Specialist Register for Rheumatology/ Speciality Registrar with CCT due within 3 months of interview date

Skills

Essential

  • Effective and demonstrable patient communication skills in written and spoken English
  • Effective IT skills
  • Self motivated and flexible approach to work
  • Evidence of effective team and multidisciplinary working

Clinical Governance

Essential

  • Evidence of participation in clinical audit and understanding of clinical risk management/governance
  • Evidence of proactive engagement with appraisal and revalidation (or equivalent)

Experience

  • Evidence of experience working in Rheumatology setting, including patient consultations, steroid injections, knowledge of biologics available
