Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for permanent Band 7 Specialist Palliative Care Nurse, 30 hpw (0.8WTE) to join the Palliative Care Hospital Liaison Team as part of the Palliative Care Service in Northumbria Healthcare Trust. The post will be Trust wide covering Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care Hospital (NSECH) in Cramlington and Wansbeck General Hospital, Ashington and may at times have to cover into another area of Northumbria. The Team support medical and nursing staff in caring for palliative patients with complex needs in an acute hospital setting.

Main duties of the job

Provide expert specialist palliative care for patient and carers with life limiting illnesses within the hospital settings.

Develop partnerships with members of Multidisciplinary Team in the Trust in order to provide a seamless service of palliative care, to enable the patient to be maintained in an environment of their choice.

Provide clinical professional support, resources and education when necessary to members of the Multidisciplinary Team.

Work as an autonomous practitioner within a multidisciplinary environment, ensuring adherence to professional codes of conduct.

Work with other professionals to promote and develop the ethos of Palliative Care within the Trust and the local community

Job responsibilities

The post holder must be able to demonstrate that they have the ability to work as an integral member of the multidisciplinary team and have excellent leadership and communication skills. They will demonstrate management of people with complex life limiting illnesses within hospital settings and will work in partnership to enable patients to be cared for in their preferred place of choice. Substantial palliative care experience would be an advantage.

Qualifications

Essential

  • NMC Registered Nurse
  • Diploma/Degree level of study
  • Registered Mentor
  • Teaching qualification or equivalent

Desirable

  • Supplementary prescribing qualification
  • Diploma in Palliative/Cancer Care
  • Oncology Qualification

Experience

Essential

  • Substantial post registration experience
  • Symptom management
  • Relevant experience in Palliative/Cancer Care

Desirable

  • Advanced communication training
  • Clinical Skills training
  • Non-medical prescribing qualification
  • Experience of working in both community and hospital settings
