Job summary

We are excited to advertise our Senior Clinical Nurse position for our 12 bedded inpatient facility commissioned by NHS England Specialist Commissioning. S3 is the only adult NHS specialist eating disorder unit in the East of England. It caters for adults over 18 years of age who have a diagnosed eating disorder and have been assessed as being at high risk due severity of their illness.

The ward provides individual intensive support for weight restoration, education and psychological interventions.

The ward works closely with regional community eating disorder teams who are gatekeepers of inpatient referrals and uses a multidisciplinary approach.

Main duties of the job

As a Senior Clinical Nurse you will be responsible for the provision of quality evidence-based nursing advice, support, and care for service users with mental and physical health needs and to their carers within a multidisciplinary setting. You will be responsible for leading on the assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of nursing care.

You will also be responsible for identifying and contributing to the training needs of junior registered and unregistered staff and ensure that issues of equality, diversity and rights are dealt with in accordance with good practice and legislation. You will ensure that effective communication pathways exist, and that they act within their sphere of responsibility, leading the night shift in the absence of the Clinical Nurse Specialist, Ward Manager or the designated deputy.

  1. To be responsible for supervising & participating in the role of namednurse in relation to care planning within the clinical area.

  2. To be responsible for the assessment, planning, implementation andevaluation of the evidence based care required, including health promotion for a named service user/group ensuring it meets Trust timescales.

  3. To participate in the setting of quality standards, including the monitoring and reviewing in line with current clinical guidance practice and policy.

  4. Utilising the data available such as learning from incidences andcomplaints.

  5. To ensure the post holder understands and meets their professional role and responsibilities under the Care Programme Approach.

  6. To ensure that the requirements of the Mental Health Act 2007 areobserved, adhered to and implemented.

  7. To be responsible for the promotion of carer and service user involvement within the service and for its provision. To encourage recovery, discovery and independence, taking into account risk assessment and management.

  8. To be responsible for establishing therapeutic relationships with service users and the implementation of evidence based therapeutic interventions with appropriate boundaries in accordance with Nursing and Midwifery Councils professional code of conduct.

  10. To be responsible for the safe custody and administration of medicines in accordance with all medicine policies and ensure compliance ismaintained.

Person Specification

Education / Qualifications

Essential

  • Registered Nurse Mental Health (RNMH) or Registered Nurse Learning Disability (RNLD)
  • NMC registration
  • Evidence of Continuing Professional Development (CPD)
  • Mentor qualification / ENB 998 or equivalent

Desirable

  • Post graduate qualification related to ward specialism
  • Additional qualification for specialism

Experience

Essential

  • Experience of inpatient services and working as part of a multidisciplinary team
  • Basic training in the Mental Capacity Act
  • Experience of providing mentorship
  • Experience of dealing with service users with complex mental health needs

Desirable

  • Previous experience of undertaking group work
  • Experience of developing service user and carer involvement
  • Experience relating to ward specialism
  • Lived experience of mental health

Skills & Abilities

Essential

  • Effective communication skills both verbally and written, including IT literacy (MS Office).
  • Ability to build effective working relationships with staff across a wide range of professional and managerial groups
  • Ability to use own initiative, to enable contribution to a multidisciplinary team approach

Knowledge and Understanding

Essential

  • Thorough understanding of care planning and the Care Programme Approach (where appropriate)
  • Understanding of the legislation relating to care including - Mental Health Act, Mental Capacity Act, Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards Act, Children's Act, Equality Act 2010, Health and Safety Act and the Data Protection Act
