Sheffield Diagnostic Genetics Service (SDGS) is a dedicated team of 100+ colleagues delivering rare disease and oncology genomics services within the North East and Yorkshire Genomic Laboratory Hub (NEY GLH).
Since April 2024, SDGS has operated as a focused 'dry' analysis and reporting department, working closely with partner laboratories in Leeds and Newcastle.
We are seeking a Service Lead Clinical Scientist with:
- Healthcare Scientist registration
- FRCPath Part 1 or equivalent experience
- Broad genetics experience, including service planning and delivery
- Compassionate leadership and strong team-support skills
- Ability to manage confidential and emotionally sensitive cases

Main duties of the job
Reporting into the Deputy Head of Service (Oncology or Rare Disease)some of your responsibilities will include:
- Lead Scientific Team -- Lead and manage a group of scientific staff to deliver timely, high-quality genomic services in Hereditary Cancers and Gastrohepatology.
- Genomic Analysis & Reporting -- Analyse, interpret and report rare disease cases in line with established policies and procedures.
- Clinical & Laboratory Liaison -- Work with clinical teams and laboratory departments locally, regionally and nationally on behalf of the GLH, ensuring service continuity, development and effective multidisciplinary meetings.
- Service Development -- Expand specialist knowledge across genomic technologies to support and drive ongoing service improvement.
- Quality & Governance Roles -- Under the guidance of the Quality Manager and Deputy Lead Scientist, take responsibility for a defined quality role (e.g., Audit Lead, EQA Lead) and contribute to departmental, directorate and wider national/international groups.

Qualifications and Training
Essential
- Degree level education (or equivalent), plus further specialist training, experience, research or study to Master's degree level or equivalent.
- Registered in appropriate scheme for Healthcare Scientist.
- Fellowship of the Royal College of Pathologists Part 1(FRCPath part 1) or equivalent experience.
Desirable
- Fellowship of the Royal College of Pathologists (FRCPath).
- A relevant higher degree such as a PhD in an appropriate subject.
Experience
Essential
- Experience in Genetics over a wide range of services with substantial experience of service planning, development and delivery.
- Management experience.
Desirable
- Research experience as evidenced by publication.
Knowledge and Skills

- Good computer skills and familiarity with data analysis packages.
