An exciting opportunity has arisen for a motivated and enthusiastic Band 6 Specialist Speech and Language Therapist to join our welcoming and supportive team, working with adults with learning disabilities across Hull and the East Riding of Yorkshire.

This community-based role offers the chance to develop specialist clinical skills in both communication and dysphagia, supporting individuals to achieve safer swallowing, improved communication, and greater independence in their everyday lives.

You will manage a varied and rewarding caseload, working both autonomously and as part of a highly collaborative multidisciplinary team. You will be supported through a robust supervision structure, with regular clinical supervision from an experienced Band 7 Speech and Language Therapy Team Lead, as well as peer support within a well-established team.

This is a rare Band 6 opportunity within our service, ideal for a therapist with relevant experience who is looking to further develop specialist skills in learning disabilities within a values-driven organisation committed to Caring, Learning and Growing.

Main duties of the job

Provide specialist assessment, diagnosis and intervention for adults with learning disabilities presenting with communication and/or dysphagia needs.

Develop and implement person-centred care plans, ensuring safety, well-being, and quality of life.

Undertake dysphagia assessments including risk management and guidance in line with current evidence and competencies.

Work collaboratively with service users, families, carers, and the wider MDT to deliver coordinated care.

Provide training, advice, and support to paid carers and professionals to promote best practice.

Contribute to risk management processes, including safeguarding and positive risk-taking approaches.

Maintain high standards of clinical record keeping and reporting.

Participate in service development, audit, and quality improvement work.

Contribute to the supervision and support of students, assistants, and less experienced staff as appropriate.

Engage in regular supervision, CPD, and reflective practice.

Qualifications and Knowledge

Essential

  • Current registration with HCPC and RCSLT
  • Full understanding of relevant policy, legislation and guidance relevant to Speech and Language Therapy in Learning Disabilities
  • Full understanding/application of relevant clinical practice/standards/audit within identified clinical area

Desirable

  • Recent experience as a supervisor and placement educator

Experience

Essential

  • Evidence of sound post-registration professional practice
  • Experience of working with patients with a range of disabilities and application of techniques such as intensive interaction, AAC
  • Evidence of planning and delivering training to carers/support staff

Skills and Competencies

Essential

  • Able to demonstrate effective communication skills and work flexibly within the team/service
  • Ability to effectively commute between the organisations various sites
