We are now welcoming Band 5 Staff Nurses to join our team on our male acute ward.

Langdale Ward is a 21-bed male acute admission ward based at Dorothy Pattison Hospital in Walsall. We support individuals experiencing an acute deterioration in their mental health, providing short-term, focused interventions aimed at helping them return home as soon as possible. As part of the role, you will also be required to work additional Place of Safety (Section 136) shifts within your 37.5-hour working week.

Main duties of the job

  • Assess patients' wellbeing and related needs, identifying and escalating physical or psychological health concerns to the appropriate team members.
  • Plan, deliver, and evaluate individualised programmes of care, working collaboratively with patients whenever possible.
  • Monitor patients' mental and physical wellbeing and contribute to safeguarding individuals whose health or safety may be at risk, in line with local policies such as the Observation Policy and Risk Management Policy.
  • Establish and maintain effective communication with the multidisciplinary team, service users, and carers regarding care plans, daily activities, and ongoing interventions.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality at all times in accordance with the Data Protection Act and professional codes of conduct.
  • Involve service users, carers, and relatives throughout episodes of care wherever feasible, ensuring choices are offered and respected.
  • Ensure support workers complete delegated ward tasks and undertake patient observations in line with policy and expected standards.
  • Contribute to service development and support positive change initiatives that enhance the quality of care provided on the ward.

Job responsibilities

  • Contribute to quality improvement initiatives, including clinical audits and the Triangle of Care, to support ongoing service development.
  • Actively participate in developing knowledge, sharing ideas, and promoting evidence based practice within the team.
  • Regularly take charge of the ward, assuming responsibility for the clinical area in the absence of the Ward Manager or Deputy Ward Manager.
  • Delegate tasks appropriately and supervise the work of junior staff in line with their skills, competence, and scope of practice.
  • Support the development of junior staff and students, fostering a positive learning environment and encouraging professional growth.
  • Provide supervision to support workers, ensuring they receive guidance, feedback, and support in their roles.
  • Participate in regular managerial and clinical supervision with the Ward Manager or Deputy Ward Manager.
  • Engage in individual performance reviews and development conversations, reflecting on goals, achievements, and career aspirations.
  • Attend mandatory training and any additional courses identified through personal development plans or required by service needs.
  • Work flexibly across a range of shifts, including nights, weekends, and bank holidays, in accordance with service requirements.
