Job summary

The post holder will undertake a structured programme of academic and clinical training leading to professional accreditation as a Clinical Perfusion Scientist. The trainee will complete the MSc Clinical Perfusion Science programme delivered through the University of Bristol and successfully achieve accreditation with the College of Clinical Perfusion Scientists. Working under the direct supervision of appropriately qualified and accredited Clinical Perfusion Scientists, the trainee will progressively develop the knowledge, skills and professional behaviours required to safely participate in the delivery of highly specialised extracorporeal circulation services. The post holder will contribute to the provision of clinical perfusion and associated services across University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust whilst maintaining patient safety at all times. The trainee will participate in clinical governance, audit, quality improvement, research and service development activities within the department. Continued employment is dependent upon satisfactory progression through both the academic and clinical training programmes.

The trainee will be paid Annex 21 Salary of Band 7 pay grade whilst completing the MSc. Upon completion of the course and all relevant competencies, the successful candidate will progress to band 8A.

Main duties of the job

Under direct supervision and in accordance with departmental competency frameworks, Trust policies, local protocols and professional standards, the post holder will progressively learn to assess patients by reviewing medical history, investigations, pathology, diagnosis, planned surgical procedure and relevant risk factors in order to contribute to safe clinical preparation and decision making. The trainee will assemble, prime, de-air and prepare cardiopulmonary bypass circuits and associated extracorporeal devices; undertake pre-use safety checks; develop competence in the conduct of cardiopulmonary bypass during adult cardiac surgery; and interpret physiological and biochemical parameters including blood pressure, blood flow, blood gases, electrolytes, anticoagulation monitoring, temperature, acid-base balance, haematology results, urine output and relevant clinical trends.

Job responsibilities

The trainee will assist in the safe delivery of cardiopulmonary bypass, cell salvage, haemofiltration techniques, thromboelastography and intra-aortic balloon pump support. They will learn specialist techniques including vacuum assisted venous drainage, retrograde cerebral perfusion, selective antegrade cerebral perfusion, left heart bypass and blood conservation strategies. The trainee will administer medicines used during extracorporeal circulation only in accordance with Trust-approved Patient Specific Prescriptions, local policies, supervision requirements and documented competency. The trainee will develop an understanding of ECMO and other long-term extracorporeal support systems, participate in simulation training and emergency drills, maintain accurate contemporaneous patient records, support safe handover and escalation, and ensure strict adherence to aseptic technique, infection prevention and patient safety requirements.

Qualifications

Essential

  • oFirst or upper second-class honours degree in a relevant life science, biomedical science, biological science, physiology, pharmacology, chemistry or related scientific discipline. Ability and commitment to undertake and successfully complete the University of Bristol MSc Clinical Perfusion Science programme and CCPS accreditation requirements

Desirable

  • oPostgraduate qualification or evidence of recent higher-level study.

Experience

Essential

  • oEvidence of working within a healthcare, scientific, technical or laboratory environment. Evidence of working safely to protocols, maintaining accurate records, managing competing priorities and learning new practical or technical skills

Desirable

  • oPrevious NHS experience, cardiothoracic theatre exposure, critical care exposure, simulation experience, research, audit or quality improvement experience.

Knowledge

Essential

  • oUnderstanding of clinical science, human physiology, anatomy, pharmacology, blood management, infection prevention, patient safety, clinical governance and risk management. Awareness of the role of clinical perfusion in adult cardiac surgery and extracorporeal circulation.

Desirable

  • oKnowledge of cardiothoracic surgery, cardiopulmonary bypass, cell salvage, ECMO, human factors, quality improvement methodology or healthcare regulation

Skills

Essential

  • oExcellent manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination; ability to learn complex technical procedures; ability to follow detailed instructions, checklists and safety processes; ability to recognise limitations and escalate concerns promptly.

Desirable

  • oExperience using complex clinical, scientific, laboratory or technical equipment.
