Job summary

This full-time position is for a Specialty Doctor with substantial experience in Urology. It offers a unique and exciting opportunity for a motivated and ambitious individual to join and contribute to the Urology team. The successful candidate will primarily work supporting a busy department that handles both emergency and elective cases.

The post will offer valuable experience in managing both acute and elective urology patients. During the Consultants' on-call week, daily Post-Take Ward Rounds will be conducted, with no routine clinical activities scheduled.

The role also requires gaining familiarity with the pre-, peri-, and post-operative care of surgical patients, as well as acquiring practical skills relevant to the post holder's level of training to effectively support the Urology department.

Main duties of the job

To undertake clinical responsibility for a range of urological patients, in agreement with relevant consultants teams.

To maximise the use of available theatre lists and clinics where appropriate and his/her expertise allow.

To be jointly responsible, together with the Registrar and Specialty Doctors, for the daily running of the ward and the care of the inpatients.

To participate in the Urology (middle-grade) On Call rota.

To promote the development of multi-disciplinary teams and shared responsibility for the provision of care to patients.

To support the development of clinical governance, using audit findings to improve the quality of treatment and to minimise clinical risk.

To work with colleagues to promote the collective aims of the department.

To participate in departmental teaching and to ensure continued professional development.

Person Specification

Education/Qualifications

Essential

  • FRCS/MRCS
  • GMC Registration

Knowledge/Skills/Clinical Expertise

Essential

  • Two years post fellowship / membership experience
  • Ability to offer expert clinical opinion on range of problems both emergency and elective within speciality
  • Ability to take responsibility for clinical care of patients and seek advice when needed
  • Competent in Flexible Cystoscopy and Transrectal Ultrasound / Prostate Biopsy

Desirable

  • Able to perform basic surgical interventions such as scrotal explorations for testicular torsions etc and able to stent ureters in case of emergency

Leadership/Management Skills

Essential

  • Ability to advise on efficient and smooth running of specialist service
  • Ability to organise and manage outpatient priorities, surgical waiting lists and operating lists

Desirable

  • Experience of audit management

Academic Achievements (including research and publications)

Essential

  • Ability to apply research outcomes to clinical and surgical problems

Desirable

  • Publications in referred journals

Teaching and Training

Essential

  • Experience of supervising F1/2 and CT's
  • Ability to teach clinical and operative skills

Desirable

  • Experience of teaching basic clinical skills to undergraduates

Interpersonal Skills

  • Ability to communicate effectively with patients, relatives, GPs, nurses and other agencies
