Job summary

We are looking for an experienced Biomedical Scientist to join our well established Blood Transfusion team as an Advanced Biomedical Scientist at Colchester Hospital. We are a friendly department who have close working relationship with our clinical consultant staff.

We have a well-designed, up-to-date lab with Grifols analysers, blood track and Contronics temperature monitoring system. For quality management we use Q-Pulse system. We are MHRA compliant and have UKAS accreditation.

Main duties of the job

Our pathology department is part of the collaborative East Coast Pathology Network (see attached document)

In this role you will be responsible for the quality and training of the team, supervision of daily operations and staff management and deputising for the Blood Transfusion Manager.

Duties include (but not limited to): supervising all Blood Transfusion sections and managing the daily organisation and staffing allocated, ensuring the analysers are maintained correctly and undertaking any troubleshooting that is required.

Manage the performance of manual, semi-automated, specialist and fully automated laboratory investigations within a defined service area accurately and efficiently.

Day to day management of stock control and usage. This may include maintaining Blood Transfusion stock levels and records and monitor usage to ensure efficient use where appropriate.

Deputise for the Transfusion Laboratory Manager in their absence, so a good knowledge of both routine and specialist Blood Transfusion is required.

Person Specification

Registration

Essential

  • HCPC registered
  • Biomedical Science Degree or equivalent
  • Appropriate Post Graduate qualifications e.g. IBMS Higher Specialist diploma or IBMS Diploma in Biomedical Science, Masters or equivalent
  • Evidence of CPD
  • Additional appropriate specialist qualification
  • Other education as specified in the person specification

Desirable

  • Holding or working towards a qualification that supports management responsibilities such as health and safety, training officer, or quality management associated with post

Knowledge & Experience

Essential

  • Highly specialist knowledge and experience across a range of work procedures and practices underpinned by theory and practice relevant to post
  • Extensive practical experience of working in a Biomedical Science laboratory
  • Experience of managing people
  • Experience of Pathology IT systems
  • Practical experience of Quality Management and Quality Management Systems
  • Experience of performing and evaluating Risk Assessments

Desirable

  • Previous relevant experience of working in the NHS
