Job summary

We are excited to offer an opportunity to join the SLT service within Nottinghamshire Healthcare Foundation Trust. We work with adults with Intellectual and Developmental Disability in inpatient and community services. We are seeking a full time (permanent) Band 7 Advanced Speech and Language Therapist to join our Adult Community Integrated Team with a mixed communication and Dysphagia caseload.

The SLT services supporta variety ofspeech, language and communication and/or dysphagia needs, covering community and specialist settings across the city and county for adults with physical, mental health needs or developmental conditions/delay including Intellectual Disability and Developmental Language Disorder.

The SLT services also include preventative information and guidance,working to empower parents, carers, otherprofessionalsand agencies to support speech,languageand communication skills as well as eating and drinking.

You will be well supported by senior colleagues, with opportunities for peer support, supervision, and CPD.

The role involves close work with colleagues from a range of disciplines and you will be contributing to a multi-disciplinary service supporting adults with intellectual disabilities in settings across Bassetlaw and West Nottinghamshire .

Main duties of the job

Your role will be to support the person to live well with their mental health, communication and eating/ drinking needs.

The post holderis responsible forproviding highlyspecialist SLT assessment, formulation and diagnosis,requiringadvanced clinical reasoning, critical thinking, reflection andinterpretation and analysis,andsubsequenttherapy/management programmes within the designated specialism/setting/district.

The post holder may also lead on strategic developments within their specialism/setting/districtin liaison with their line manager. They will also lead on the development and delivery of training and professional mentorship in their specialism/setting/district.

Job description

Job responsibilities

Thisrolerequires a high level of clinical and professional expertise in order thatthose withspeech, language and communication needs and/or dysphagianeedsand theircarersand familiesbenefit from a well-coordinated pro-active, specialist, efficient and effective speech and language therapy service within the designatedspecialism/setting/district.

Specialist speech, language, and communication assessments focusing on functional communication and what reasonable adjustments (Accessible Information Standards) should be in place to support the persons needs.

Liaison, advice and recommendations that aim to prevent further communication breakdown and that aim to empower the person to express their thoughts and opinions to the extent they wishes. You will work in an interactive and a consultative way.

The role will also involve assessing and developing the management of eating and drinking difficulties for individuals, where issues arise due to a variety of physiological, cognitive and environmental reasons.

Co-working with your MDT colleagues, families, and carers to enable their inclusive communication practices in their relationships, care, and interactions with the individual.

Please note applicants will be required to pay for their DBS check. Costs are deducted from salary following appointment. The cost of the DBS application is £26.40 (standard) or £54.40 (enhanced), this cost will be deducted from your salary over the first 2 months of employment.

You are encouraged to enrol for the DBS Update Service. An annual fee of £16 per year applies.

A full UK driving license and vehicle for business use is required for this post; however reasonable adjustments will be made for disabled individuals in line with the Equality Act 2010.

Qualifications and Training

Essential

  • Recognised SLT Degree/diploma
  • RCLST Registered
  • HCPC Registered
  • Masters Degree in related subject or additional postgraduate training/experience up to master's degree equivalent.
  • Portfolio of relevant post qualification CPD including highly specialist knowledge of Speech, Language and Communication Needs (SLCN) of service users with Aspergers, Autism, Developmental Language Disorder, mental health diagnoses and other neuro-developmental disabilities

Desirable

  • Postgraduate training specific to client group - People with Aspergers/Autism/ID with criminal offences

Experience

Essential

  • Working experience of assessing and managing a complex caseload with young people and/or adults with speech, language and communication needs.
  • Experience of effective multi-disciplinary/agency working and established interpersonal and negotiation skills
  • Experience of designing and delivering different learning and development opportunities for staff teams
  • Experience of delivering environmental approaches to SLT service delivery and evaluating them
  • Experience in developing evaluation / audit tools and resources as part of SLT team

Desirable

  • Experience of autism diagnostic tools (ADOS/ADIR)
  • Highly specialist experience of working with people with autism / Asperger syndrome complex intellectual disabilities and mental health diagnoses/personality disorders
  • Experience of leading / managing project work.
  • Experience of supporting students and other staff
  • Post basic dysphagia training or completed competencies
