Job summary

We are seeking an enthusiastic and motivated doctor to join our paediatric team as a Clinical Fellow at SHO level (ST1/2 equivalent) for a 12month fixed-term appointment.

Role Overview

This post offers an excellent opportunity to gain broad-based experience in paediatrics, with a primary focus on the neonatal unit. There will also be opportunities to work on paediatric wards, dependent on rota requirements. The balance between neonatal and general paediatrics exposure will be discussed and agreed at interview.

Who This Role Is For

This position is ideally suited to Doctors planning a career in Paediatrics who wish to gain experience before applying for run-through training

Doctors considering careers in Anaesthetics, Emergency Medicine, or Surgery who are keen to develop paediatric and neonatal experience

Contract: 12 months fixed term

Hours: 40 hours per week

Start Date: September 2026

Setting: Neonatal unit (primary) with additional paediatric ward exposure

Main duties of the job

Neonatal

To provide neonatal care to infants on Somerset Neonatal Unit and postnatal wards under supervision of specialist registrars and neonatal consultants. This will include attending ward rounds, note keeping, performing practical procedures, arranging investigations, and collating results.

To perform New-born Infant Physical Examinations ("baby checks") on the postnatal wards.

To attend new-born deliveries where a paediatrician is requested and provide new-born life support (NLS) when required.

To admit sick and premature new-borns to the unit and initiate their management under supervision.

Paediatric

To provide care for inpatients on Acorn and Oak wards under the supervision of the ST 4-8 grade registrar and consultant on service. This will include attending ward rounds, note keeping, arranging investigations, and collating results

To clerk, investigate and treat emergency and day case referrals on the Paediatric Assessment Unit under supervision of the registrar and consultant on service.

To attend and support outpatient clinics (but not required to deliver own clinic lists)

Further Activities

To participate fully in the departmental teaching and training programme.

To become familiar with local clinical policies, guidelines, and protocols.

To be aware of and comply with the Trust's policies and procedures relating to Clinical Governance and Health & Safety at Work.

To provide cover for colleagues in their absence. To deal with emergencies flexibly, as the occasion demands.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • Medical Degree
  • Full GMC registration with a licence to practice

Experience

Essential

  • Achieved all competencies equivalent to NHS Foundation training years 1 and 2

Desirable

  • Previous paediatric experience. Additional experience (e.g., A & E or Anaesthetics)
  • Previous experience working in NHS

Additional Criteria

Essential

  • Appropriate for level of experience e.g. capacity to apply sound clinical knowledge and judgement.
  • Ability to recognize a sick patient.
  • Phlebotomy, and IV cannulation
  • Skills in adults

Desirable

  • Advanced paediatric life support courses (e.g., EPALS, NALS, APLS)
