Band 8A Clinical Scientist LCMS and Biochemistry
We are looking for an enthusiastic and dynamic HCPC registered Clinical Scientist with Part 1 FRCPath to join our team at Berkshire and Surrey Pathology Services. BSPS is a large network of NHS laboratories serving 6 NHS hospital sites: Ashford & St Peter's, Frimley Park, Royal Berkshire, Royal Surrey, East Surrey Hospital and Wexham Park.
This is a 0.4 who time equivalent (2 days a week) fixed term post for one year to cover maternity leave in our LCMS section which is part of our Specialist Biochemistry Services Department. This provides a really exciting opportunity to get involved in an evolving LCMS department.
The post holder will be employed by the Royal Surrey County Foundation Trust in Guildford and will be part of the broader BSPS clinical team, a wonderfully friendly, cohesive and dynamic team that cover our 6 hospital sites.

Main duties of the job
The biochemistry department is strong clinically and analytically with an enthusiastic and supportive team of able chemical pathologists, clinical scientists and biomedical scientists providing a broad range of services including specialist analytical (LC-MSMS, ICP-MS, immunoassay, POCT), interpretive and EQA services. Clinical services run by the department include bariatric, renal stone and lipid OPD clinics and a clinical investigation unit. The Department is a Supraregional Assay Service Laboratory for Trace Elements and Peptide Hormones. It provides External Quality Assessment Schemes for trace elements, peptide hormones and Point of Care Testing. It also has a cardiovascular biomarkers lab. The Department works closely with the University of Surrey, which brings together a variety of analytical and clinical groups within the University and NHS.

Job responsibilities
Clinical:
Contribute to the duty biochemist rota by;
- Facilitating timely reporting of analytical results.
- Supporting daily laboratory quality control procedures.
- Providing advice to clinicians on the appropriateness of laboratory tests.
- Providing clinical comments, where necessary, on laboratory reports.
- Authorise laboratory results.
- Provide interpretive advice and support to clinicians served by BSPS.
- Contribute to the management of the laboratory interpretive service.
- Organise and ensure adequately trained staff on the Clinical Authorisation rota for LCMS
Technical and Scientific
- Lead in conjunction with other staff the evaluation and implementation of assays and analysers.
- Develop and maintain personal expertise in the use of a wide variety of laboratory equipment to enable a broad spectrum of tests to be performed for evaluation projects.
- Prepare materials for testing equipment and kits using accurate and precise techniques (pipetting/ weighing/ volumetric measurement).
- Undertake such analytical procedures as are necessary for the evaluation of selected devices and equipment.
- Keep detailed records of all analytical work undertaken, for reasons of audit and good laboratory practice.
- Ensure the validity of any data using recognized quality procedures and follow troubleshooting procedures to resolve any problems encountered.
- Attend instrument training courses and scientific meetings as necessary for the effective performance of the work programme.
- Participate in scientific and technical training as required.
Communication
- Communicate using oral, written and electronic methods. This can require tact and diplomacy, persuading others to provide goods, services and information to time, and at minimal cost.
- Work effectively with NHS locally and throughout the UK and with other institutions, national bodies and manufacturers and suppliers of devices as necessary for the effectiveness of the work programme.
- Negotiate with companies to elicit cooperation with projects, including the loan of equipment and donation or purchase of consumables at lowest cost.
- Liaise with staff in laboratories recruited to support projects or to provide samples for analysis or information for reliability monitoring.
- Write detailed reports following standard operating procedures and using templates provided.
- Assist with the preparation and delivery of lectures and presentations, including scientific posters for conferences, meetings and university courses, as and when required.
- Travel to external sites to perform and/or monitor projects.
- Design and deliver training to staff within the department regarding use of analysers.
IT
- Prepare computer records of analytical data and perform appropriate statistical analysis on such data.
- Enter and extract data from databases.
- Prepare illustrated reports when required. Reports may include graphical representation of data. Use scanning and digital photography and associated software for editing and manipulation of images.
- Use appropriate tools to maintain and use a reference database.
Health and Safety
- Attend mandatory training.
- Maintain knowledge of current practice with regard to health and safety, COSHH and risk assessments, ensuring compliance within the Research laboratory
- Ensure all laboratory equipment is used and maintained to safety standards.
Person Specification
Qualifications
Essential
- First degree in Biochemistry or Chemistry or other directly relevant subject.
- Masters degree in clinical biochemistry or assessed equivalent level of knowledge and expertise in the specialty
- Registered as a clinical scientist with Health Care Professions Council
- Part 1 FRCPath

- Relevant PhD
Knowledge, Skills & Experience
Essential
- To have excellent diagnostic reasoning to assimilate a wide range of normal and abnormal clinical biochemistry results and advise medical and nursing staff and other health professionals on investigation and interpretation of biochemical results and where necessary the findings from other disciplines
- To have undertaken Research, Development and Audit activities
- To be developing in depth expertise in one or more specialized analytical or clinical areas
Desirable
- To have received formal training in audit, appraisal and management
- To have had teaching experience
- To have an awareness of tests used for early diagnosis of bowel cancer
