Job summary

The Head of Fundraising will lead the strategic development and delivery of all fundraising activities for Newcastle Hospitals Charity. This senior role is responsible for maximising voluntary income to support patients, staff, and services across Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

You will oversee a diverse fundraising portfolio, including major gifts, trusts and foundations, corporate partnerships, community fundraising, and individual giving. Working closely with the Deputy Charity Director (Income and Engagement) and wider team, you will shape and implement a sustainable fundraising strategy aligned to organisational priorities and growth ambitions.

The role requires strong leadership and people management skills, with responsibility for motivating, and developing a high-performing fundraising team. You will also act as a key ambassador for the charity, cultivating relationships with high-value supporters, partners, and stakeholders locally and nationally.

The successful candidate will bring a track record of delivering significant income growth, excellent relationship management skills, and the ability to translate strategic vision into operational success in a values-driven environment.

Main duties of the job

The postholder will lead and manage the delivery of a diverse and high-performing fundraising programme, ensuring income targets are met and exceeded across multiple income streams. They will develop and implement fundraising strategies, build and steward relationships with major donors, corporate partners, and key stakeholders, and oversee effective supporter engagement. The role includes direct line management, providing leadership, development, and performance management to build a cohesive and motivated team. The Head of Fundraising will ensure robust processes, compliance, and best practice, while working collaboratively across the Trust to align fundraising priorities with organisational needs. They will also act as an ambassador for the charity, enhancing its profile and reputation locally and nationally.

Job description

Job responsibilities

  • The post holder will be responsible for developing and implementing a fundraising strategy to raise awareness and achieve agreed income projections across targeted revenue streams and platforms, including digital appeals/campaigns
  • Lead on maximising growth opportunities for current partnerships and supporter networks
  • Lead on the identification and engagement of potential new supporters across targeted fundraising programmes
  • Grow, nurture and manage a range of external relationships to achieve income generation goals
  • Oversee an effective programme of supporter stewardship
  • Ensure fundraising activity is managed within agreed income and expenditure budgets and delivers on agreed return on investment (RoI)
  • Oversee fundraising performance to ensure income projections are achievable and quality is maintained, producing monthly reports for the senior team and the Charity Committee
  • Adhere to the fundraising code of conduct, ensuring donor support, messaging and tactics meet the agreed fundraising governance and quality standard and is cost effective
  • Continually identify and develop opportunities for growing income
  • Lead, inspire manage and support the fundraising team to meet fundraising projections and goals, and to achieve their potential
  • Agree objectives and monitor progress, identifying and agreeing development opportunities
  • Nurture and develop fundraising volunteers
  • Represent Newcastle Hospitals Charity at key meetings internally and externally
  • Deputise for the Deputy Charity Director as required

Person Specification

Qualifications & Education

Essential

  • Degree level education
  • Postgraduate qualification, or demonstrable equivalent level experience

Knowledge & Experience

Essential

  • Experience of relationship management and effective engagement of a range of stakeholders, at all levels, both internal and external
  • Experience in working at a senior level and strategic thinking
  • Highly developed specialist knowledge in relation to charity regulation and professional fundraising standards
  • Knowledge of information and data protocols
  • Knowledge and experience of gift aid and tax effective giving

Desirable

  • Leadership experience of working in a charity and/or healthcare setting
  • Volunteer and/or Line management
  • Use of CRM database packages or similar

  • Proven ability to develop, direct and deliver successful fundraising programmes and campaigns.
  • Proven ability of working both independently and in large teams within a charity, business development or healthcare environment
  • Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills
  • Highly skilled negotiator with effective skills in influencing and persuasion
  • Practical statistical, analytical, visualisation and numerical skills
  • Proven ability to analyse and assess charity performance and inform decisions about future income generation potential based on market analysis, performance data and financial information
