Job summary

The Safeguarding Midwifery Practitioner provides specialist leadership and support for safeguarding within maternity services across the Humber Health Partnership.

Working closely with the Safeguarding Children Team, the post holder supports the Named Midwife for Safeguarding Children in delivering statutory responsibilities and ensuring safe, high-quality care for women, babies and families.

Main duties of the job

The role includes offering expert safeguarding advice to maternity staff, supporting complex decision-making in child protection cases, preparing detailed reports, contributing to pre-birth panels, and chairing safeguarding meetings while keeping the unborn child central to all decisions.

The practitioner delivers safeguarding supervision to promote reflective, evidence-based practice and supports compliance with training standards. They contribute to service development, audit, and quality improvement, ensuring adherence to safeguarding assurance processes and CQC requirements.

Working collaboratively with leadership teams and multi-agency partners, the post holder remains visible and accessible across hospital and community settings. The role requires significant safeguarding expertise, strong leadership and communication skills, and the ability to manage sensitive information while influencing practice across professional boundaries.

Person Specification

Education and Qualifications

Essential

  • Registered Midwife with current UK NMC registration
  • PROMPT Trained and up to date
  • Level 3 safeguarding training
  • Safeguarding supervisor

Desirable

  • Teaching qualification
  • Leadership / management qualification
  • Masters degree or working towards

Knowledge Training and experience

Essential

  • Band 6 or above with 3 years' experience
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Proven ability to prioritise own workload and meet deadlines

Desirable

  • Experience of teaching/presenting

Communication and interpersonal skills

  • Competent in IT, able to produce detailed and accurate reports and use spreadsheets
