Job summary

To deliver high quality, child and family centred nursing care for children and young people with diabetes, with a strong focus on education, empowerment, and self-management. The post holder will support structured education for patients, families, schools, and other professionals, working collaboratively within the multidisciplinary paediatric diabetes team to promote safe, effective, and evidence-based diabetes management across healthcare and educational settings.

Main duties of the job

Support assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of individualised diabetes care plans.

Assist with education for CYP, families, schools and other professionals surrounding blood glucose monitoring, insulin administration (including multiple daily injections, pumps, and hybrid closed-loop systems), and the management of hypo- and hyperglycaemia.

Support children and young people at diagnosis, during inpatient admissions, attendance at clinic appointments and at key healthcare transition points.

Job responsibilities

Education and Teaching

Play an active role in delivering age-appropriate diabetes education to children and young people, families, schools and other professionals promoting independence and confidence in self-management.

Provide structured education and practical training to parents and carers, including insulin administration, carbohydrate counting, sick day rules, and diabetes technology.

Deliver diabetes education and training to schools, nurseries, and colleges to support safe diabetes management in educational settings.

Contribute to the development and review of healthcare plans for children and young people in school.

Act as a point of contact for school staff, offering advice, guidance, and reassurance regarding day-to-day diabetes management and emergency care.

Support, plan and contribute to group education sessions, study days, and awareness training for healthcare and non-healthcare professionals.

Multidisciplinary and Interagency Working

Work collaboratively with paediatricians, dietitians, psychologists, school nurses, health visitors, and community teams.

Attend and contribute to outpatient clinics, MDT meetings, and education sessions.

Liaise with education providers and community services to ensure continuity of care and safe practice across settings.

Person Specification

Education, training and qualifications

Essential

  • Registered Nurse (Child) - NMC registered
  • Evidence of relevant continuing professional development

Desirable

  • Teaching qualification

Knowledge and experience

Essential

  • Experience working with children and young people in a paediatric setting
  • Demonstrable interest in diabetes care and patient education
  • Understanding of the educational and psychosocial impact of diabetes on children and young people

Desirable

  • Experience in paediatric diabetes or long-term conditions
  • Knowledge of insulin pumps, CGM, and hybrid closed-loop systems
  • Experience delivering education or training (including to schools or community settings)

Skills

Essential

  • Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team and across agencies (health and education)
  • Effective communication skills, with the ability to explain complex diabetes information in an age-appropriate and accessible way
  • Organisational skills to support the running of diabetes clinics and manage competing priorities
  • Ability to adapt communication style to meet the needs of children with different developmental, cultural, and learning needs
