Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced and enthusiastic Applied Psychologist (Clinical or Counselling) to join our Neuropsychology Service within the Shropshire Community Neurological Rehabilitation Team, based in Shrewsbury.

Main duties of the job

This role offers the successful applicant the opportunity to manage a specialist caseload, delivering high-quality psychological assessment and intervention for adults adjusting to life following acquired or traumatic brain injury, as well as a range of neurological conditions. You will work therapeutically with individuals experiencing cognitive, emotional, behavioural, and psychosocial changes, helping to support recovery, adjustment, and quality of life.

The postholder will also provide specialist psychological advice, consultation, and training to colleagues and other professionals within the multidisciplinary team, contributing to integrated and holistic care.

In addition, there will be opportunities to contribute to service evaluation, audit, research, and policy development. The role includes offering appropriate clinical and/or research supervision, supporting the development of peers and less experienced psychologists, and actively promoting psychologically informed practice across the service.

You will join a friendly, supportive, and dynamic team of psychological professionals, working closely with Consultant Clinical Psychologists and fellow Psychologist colleagues. The wider multidisciplinary team includes specialist Neuro Occupational Therapists, Speech and Language Therapists, and Neuro Physiotherapists, ensuring a collaborative and comprehensive approach to neurorehabilitation.

Training and Qualificatons

Essential

  • Doctoral degree in Clinical Psychology (or equivalent for those trained prior to 1996) providing eligibility for registration with Health Care Professions Council (HCPC)
  • Evidence of further post qualification training /short courses relevant to the post
  • Evidence of continuing professional development in line with the requirements of HCPC registration

Experience

Essential

  • Significant experience working with a wide variety of clients with acquired neurological disorders across the full range of care settings
  • Ability to maintain a high degree of professionalism in the face of highly emotive and distressing problems, verbal abuse and the threat of physical abuse
  • Post qualification experience of working within neuro rehab settings
  • Experience of supervision of pre-qualification psychologists or non-psychological professionals
  • Experience of teaching/training with psychologists or non-psychological professionals
  • Experience of working clinically within multidisciplinary teams
  • Experience of audit/research/evaluation
  • Experience of exercising full clinical responsibility for a patient's psychological care and treatment

Knowledge and Skills

Essential

  • Specialist knowledge and skills working in adult neuro rehab settings; understanding the systemic issues concerned and the specialised psychological interventions necessary to work in this field.
  • Well-developed skills and experience in providing consultation to other professional and non-professional groups using a variety of models
  • Well-developed skills in providing supervision to both psychological and non-psychological colleagues
  • Advanced skills in the ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing, highly technical, and clinically sensitive information to clients, their families, carers and other professional colleagues both within and outside the NHS.
  • Knowledge and skills in teaching/training using a variety of complex multimedia materials suitable for presentations within public, professional and academic settings
