Job summary

This role offers a unique opportunity to join a supportive and welcoming Speech and Language Therapy team working within community integrated stroke services and acute SLT services. You will be based Withybush General Hospital, Haverfordwest.

This post is ideal for a clinician who enjoys variety in their day, values collaboration, and wants to make a tangible difference in patients' recovery journeys. You'll work closely with our MDTs on the wards at Withybush General Hospital and community services, supporting patients with communication and swallowing needs post stroke as they transition from hospital to home.

Given the community aspect of the role, the ability to travel across Pembrokeshire efficiently is important, as you will be visiting patients in their own homes as part of their ongoing rehabilitation and support.

You will be part of a service that values both clinical quality and staff wellbeing. We're a small team that offers regular supervision, peer support and opportunities to learn from others.

Main duties of the job

To contribute to the provision of speech and language therapy for the population of Hywel Dda University Health by providing high quality, efficient and effective speech and language therapy services, within available resources and in accordance with the Registration Codes of HCPC and RCSLT.

Work as part of the Community Integrated Stroke Service and Acute SLT services, supporting timely, safe, and person-centred discharge from hospital to community.

Liaise closely with a range of professionals contributing to holistic care planning.

Deliver rehabilitation-focused interventions in hospital and community settings, adapting your approach to suit a wide range of needs and environments.

Support patients and their families through education, advice and collaborative goal setting.

Actively contribute to MDT meetings, case discussions, and service development.

Maintain accurate and timely clinical records in line with professional and local standards.

To make specialist clinical decisions following assessment, including referrals to other services, professions as appropriate eg FEES, VF, dietetics.

Qualifications and Knowledge

Essential

  • Degree in Speech and Language Therapy
  • HCPC registered
  • RCSLT membership
  • RCSLT Accredited Dysphagia Training
  • Successful completion of specialist short courses relevant to area of clinical expertise to postgraduate diploma level
  • Knowledge of a wide range of specialist assessment tools and procedures relevant to specialist caseload
  • Knowledge of multidisciplinary team approaches
  • Knowledge of key characteristics leading to a specialist differential diagnosis relevant to specialist caseload
  • Knowledge of selecting, setting and evaluating specialist treatment goals
  • Knowledge of a specialist range of therapeutic interventions demonstrating the evidence base for these approaches

Desirable

  • Well established knowledge of national policies and procedures relevant to area of clinical expertise
  • Member of relevant CEN
  • Basic Counselling Skills
  • Basic qualitative and quantitative research approaches

Experience

Essential

  • Considerable post registration clinical experience relevant to the advertised post/specialist area including: - Supervision of support workers - Meeting patient/service user needs through collaborative working with families, carers other professionals and the wider workforce

  • Full SLT Student placement, inclusive of assessment
  • Support of junior staff
  • Delivery of specialist training to a range of audiences
  • Working with groups
